Bill MacDonald is a lifelong nature and art enthusiast and family man living in Canton, Massachusetts—the town where he was raised after being born in nearby Marshfield. His passion for stones began in childhood, when he saved every penny to visit his favorite shop, Donderos Rock Shop in North Conway, New Hampshire, during family vacations.

Thirty years ago, while hiking in Durango, Colorado, with his sister, he discovered a balanced rock garden that stopped him in his tracks. She taught him the simple art of balancing one stone atop another, and he was instantly hooked. He began creating these meditative stacks everywhere he went. Then came the breakthrough: the realization that he could balance multiple stones into sculptural compositions. At that moment, Stone of Art was born.

For the past 25 years, Bill has designed and hand-crafted (or machine-assisted) balanced stone sculptures that transcend simple stacking. Each piece is conceived as a unique fine-art installation—rooted in balance, patience, and presence—with deep philosophical meaning. Whether placed as striking landscaping features in gardens, estates, or public spaces, his sculptures invite reflection, harmony with nature, and a sense of wonder.

Creating these works is more than a craft; it is Bill’s passion and obsession. He is dedicated to inspiring others to experience the beauty and mindfulness his sculptures bring to any environment.
